Simple way to pay yourself for self improvement:

I made a game for a client of mine who, like many of us, is overly critical of himself.

The game is simple. For the next 5 days, you are to track how many future dollars and happiness points you earn. How do you earn future dollars? Every time you have a positive thought, I want you to pay yourself in future dollars. 5 dollars for a simple positive thought, and 10 or 20 for rare or profound realizations. See how many future dollars you pay yourself each day.

As for happiness points, those are even easier. Every time you do something for your mental physical or spiritual health, you earn one point.

Positive thinking can really add up and spiral out of control with future earnings so make sure to keep a tally, and also if you notice you start earning too much to easily keep track of, that’s a sign you’re doing the right things.

You can do it the other way: if you have a negative belief pop up that you seem to be ruminating over, I want you to do 10 or 20 push ups and distract yourself for a bit. Most things don’t need to be thought about or worried over (Even serious ones) for more than a few minutes at a time. That’s about all we can process and metabolize.

Anyway feel free to use this if you want or come up with your own. I like the structure as a way to help yourself implement some good healthy habits.

It’s not about what you come up with, its just about committing to and then taking the action that matters.
